LOCATION: HSU Campus, Abilene, TX

SUMMARY/SCOPE:

The Admissions Counselor is a professional admission officer who provides autonomous support and preservation of the HSU admissions and recruiting process in accordance with the mission and image of the University.

HSU JOB FAMILY CLASSIFICATION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: These examples do not include all possible tasks & do not limit the assignment of related tasks.  

Recruiting, Admission Counseling, Financial Aid Counseling, strategically manage designated geographic territory.

Recruiting

Travel extensively throughout a primary recruiting market to seek, select, and convert prospective students to HSU to actual enrolled students.

Travel extensively throughout Texas conducting and/or hosting high school fairs, church visits, fellowships, alumni association meetings, send-off parties, and other conversion activities. The possibilities are endless and are not limited to these listed. Creativity and independency are a must.

Counsel prospective students and their parents to inform them of admission requirements, financial assistance programs and processes, scholarship eligibility, student life, and other aspects of HSU.

Able to foster and maintain professional relationships with prospective students and their families.

Able to communicate effectively both in person and in written format. Presentations to groups and individuals required.

Administrative

Provide weekly, quarterly and annual territory reports to Director of Recruiting.

Assists with daily campus visits as well as seasonal activities, projects and/or events.

When necessary, assist with daily campus tours for prospective students and families.

Weekend and night work occasionally required.

Additional departmental administrative duties may be assigned.

General

Must be able to work with multiple constituents in a manner congruent with the image and mission of the University. Constituents include but not limited to: prospective students, current students, alumni, trustees, other college/university personnel, and various internal personnel.

Must be able to work on multiple software platforms to include Microsoft Office suite Slate CRM.

Knowledge of the Internet and Social Media platforms required. HSU is an Ellucian/Colleague database school.

Adheres to guidelines in the University Personnel and Safety Handbooks and departmental policies.

Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES (Language, Mathematical, Reasoning and Computer Skills):

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of all Microsoft Office Software (Excel, Word, Outlook) and Slate, our Customer Relationship Management system. Knowledge of the internet, instant message/texting and social media required. HSU is an Ellucian/Colleague database school, prior knowledge is a plus but is not a requirement.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree required; preference will be given to applicants who have a degree from Hardin-Simmons University.

1-2 years of customer service or sales experience preferred.

Ability to proficiently speak Spanish as a first or second language is preferred.

The job is active in nature in that the position requires giving frequent tours of the campus to prospective students and their families and/or other campus visitors.

This job also requires the ability to sit or stand for long periods while performing office and phone/computer operations and/or while driving due to extensive travel.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This is a Non-Exempt, Full-Time Hourly Staff Position.  

A regular 40-hour workweek is required at minimum (plus occasional overtime).

Working beyond a normal 40-hour week is a definite including occasional nights and weekends.

Travel and irregular work hours are required.

All hours worked beyond 40 hours in a single work week will be compensated at time and a half, per FLSA guidelines.

Must have and maintain a valid Class C Driver’s License and maintain a clear driving record to be insurable under the university liability policy.

Frequent travel is required, including evenings and weekends, especially as part of travel.

Must be able to drive to complete work assignments on and off campus, as needed.

Additional travel may be required on occasion.
