SUMMARY/SCOPE:

SLI (Student Learning Initiative) Instructors will teach SLI courses and engage in weekly meetings with colleagues, students and Peer Academic Coaches. SLI Instructors are the backbone of Hardin-Simmons University’s Strategic Learning Initiative, which will serve 150 first-time freshmen (FTF) students at risk of academic failure each semester. The initiative is designed to help FTF students develop the academic skills to successfully transition from high school to college and to help sophomores, juniors, and seniors who fail to maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0. The Initiative will consist of a one credit-hour course designed to help these students develop proven learning strategies and apply them to other courses to achieve academic success. SLI students will also engage in weekly individual meetings with an assigned SLI Instructor or Peer Academic Coach to ensure the completion of all academic responsibilities and to support students as they navigate college-life challenges.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: These examples do not include all possible tasks & do not limit the assignment of related tasks.

Provide instruction using active learning techniques, engaging students, and using assessments to measure learning.

Meet weekly with up to 15 students for one-half hour each to help students meet their academic goals and navigate college-life challenges.

Train and supervise Peer Academic Coaches who meet weekly with students about academic goals and college-life challenges.

Meet weekly with other SLI Instructors and the Director of Student Achievement to assess course and student success and to cooperate with necessary course changes.

Maintain focus on student persistence, academic standing, and college graduation rates.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Directly supervise multiple student employees working as Peer Academic Coaches. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training student employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining student employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES (Language, Mathematical, Reasoning and Computer Skills):

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software; spreadsheet software; project management software; order processing systems; internet software; development software and contact management systems.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Master’s degree required; a degree in curriculum and instruction, instructional design, organization leadership, counseling, or educational psychology preferred.

Three (3) years of teaching experience in a college setting preferred. Experience in an academic success setting (i.e., academic learning center, tutoring center, onboarding center, or supplemental instruction program) can be substituted for teaching experience at a college or university.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This position is a Full-Time, Exempt Level Faculty Position with a teaching load at the Hardin-Simmons University campus. Additional travel may be required for student evaluation/sponsorship and/or professional development.

A minimum of a 40-hour work week is expected. Irregular hours and evening and weekend work and/or assignments beyond a 40-hour work week will sometimes be required to meet project deadlines.

Must have and maintain a valid Class C Driver’s License and maintain a clear driving record to be insurable under the university liability policy.

Must be able to drive to complete work assignments on and off campus, as needed.

Travel may be required on occasion to attend training workshops.
