POSITION:  Assistant or Associate Professor of Theatre, Non-Tenure Track (Exempt)

COLLEGE/DEPARTMENT:  Theatre

SUPERVISOR TITLE:  Head of the Department of Fine Arts and the Dean of the Cynthia Ann Parker College of Liberal Arts

FLSA STATUS:  Exempt

EXEMPTION:  Teacher Exemption

LOCATION: HSU Campus, Abilene, TX

TARGET HIRE DATE: Initial review of applications will begin on February 20, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled. Anticipated start date is August 2023.

SUMMARY/SCOPE:

The person in this position will teach theatre classes as well as supervise and assist with performance and visual aspects of stage productions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Provide exemplary teaching of theatre classes, including classes associated with acting, history, design, and technical aspects of theatre. Normal teaching load will include four courses in each of the fall and spring semesters, with regular office hours.

Direct at least one show per year. Ability to serve as music director is an advantage.

Supervise and assist with performances as well as visual and design aspects of stage productions.

Advise current and prospective Theatre students.

Collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, administrators, and members of the community.

Participate in recruitment activities for the Theatre program as well as the university.

Provide service to the university through involvement in committees as well as university activities (e.g., commencement).

Engage in ongoing scholarly work as well as professional development.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This faculty member may supervise the Assistant Theater Technical Director; may supervise student workers in the scene shop.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES (Language, Mathematical, Reasoning and Computer Skills):

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. 

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. 

COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software; Internet software; Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, Design software; Payroll systems and Order processing systems.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

A completed master’s degree and at least 18 completed graduate hours in Theatre is required. Either a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree or a doctoral degree in the field of Theater is preferred.

Additionally, a minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience, five (5) years of professional experience as director, designer, or technical director, or combination of these two is preferred.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This position is a Full-Time Exempt Level Faculty position with a teaching load at the Hardin-Simmons University campus.

In addition to teaching, this position often requires extensive evening and/or week-end work in order to meet theater production deadlines and/or attend fine arts productions and/or various campus events. 

Ability to travel for recruiting or training is desired.

Must have and maintain a valid Class C Driver’s License and maintain a clear driving record to be insurable under the university liability policy.

Must be able to drive to complete work assignments on and off campus, as needed.
