POSITION:  Summer - HSU Learn to Swim Staff

DEPARTMENT:  Kinesiology Sport/Recreation

SUPERVISOR TITLE:  Associate Professor of Kinesiology

SUMMARY/SCOPE:

Deck Supervisor: The Deck Supervisor manages assigned shifts — including supervision of on-deck employees, lifeguards, swim coaches and Swim Instructors. Deck supervisor will maintain the pool environment and interact with students and parents. He or she performs as an expert on all levels of the HSU Learn to Swim Program curriculum and demonstrates thorough knowledge of HSU Learn to Swim Program management policies and practices.

Swim Instructor: Instruct kids or adults about proper techniques and water safety while using the proven HSU Learn to Swim Program curriculum to produce those extraordinary results.

Lifeguard: Ensure the safety of swimmers and visitors to the HSU aquatic facility.  The lifeguard will explain the safety rules to patrons, warn them of unsafe situations, and enforce policies on safety and proper attire.  He or she will maintain orderliness by inspecting pool areas and restrooms.  He or she will also monitor pool equipment and record pool temperature.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Deck Supervisor:

  • Provides leadership, discipline, and constructive feedback to instructors and staff to ensure quality delivery of the HSU Learn to Swim program curriculum.
  • Conduct daily pre-shifts meetings, and prepares the deck for the shift.
  • Conducts periodic evaluations of instructors, and deck staff.
  • Interacts with parents/guardians to discuss student progress. Acts as a HSU Learn to Swim Program “ambassador” to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Completes daily Deck Supervisor logs, and monitors the children’s attendance.
  • Coordinates tasks required to ensure the cleanliness of the pool facility.
  • Arranges for replacements for absent employees.
  • Act as substitute swim instructor when necessary.
  • As a member of the deck supervisor team, suggests areas for improvement and implements corrective action through in-services or other training.
  • Participates in training/in-services as required.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.
  • Participates in training/in-service as required.

Swim Instructor:

  • Provides swim instruction based on the HSU Learn to Swim Program curriculum.
  • Enforces safety rules and regulations to prevent accidents. Makes rescues and administers first aid when necessary.
  • Evaluates students’ progress. Completes required paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Interacts with parents/guardians on the activities and development of students’ swim skills.
  • Acts as an HSU LTS “ambassador” to ensure parental satisfaction.
  • Uses problem solving/creative thinking skills to identify and resolve challenges that students encounter.
  • Inspects pool areas before and after each class for possible maintenance, cleanliness or damage issues. Reports issues to management as appropriate.
  • Maintains and ensures proper storage of all pool equipment.
  • Reports accidents and incidents to management. Completes required documentation and paperwork.
  • Performs deck teacher duties as needed.
  • Occasionally performs light cleaning duties such as, trash removal etc.
  • Occasionally required to attend in-service training outside of regular working hours.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.
  • Participates in training/in-service as required.

Lifeguard:

  • Overseeing activities at aquatic facility.
  • Assisting with swimming lessons.
  • Explaining and enforcing rules, regulations and policies to ensure safety of patrons.
  • Monitoring designated areas to recognize signs of danger.
  • Warning swimmers regarding unsafe situations.
  • Maintaining order in swimming areas.
  • Responding to emergencies and rescuing swimmers in danger of drowning.
  • Performing first aid procedures.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and orderliness of all areas.
  • Maintaining records and reports.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Deck Supervisor:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • High School Program diploma or GED required
  • Two or more years as a swim instructor preferred
  • Experience as a certified lifeguard, youth sports instructor/coach, camp counselor, and/or teacher preferred
  • CPR/First Aid/AED and Starfish Swim Instructor certification required (all offered through HSU)

Swim Instructor:

  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • High School Program diploma or GED preferred
  • Experience as a certified lifeguard, youth sports instructor/coach, camp counselor, and/or child care provider preferred
  • CPR/First Aid/AED certification preferred (Available through HSU)
  • Starfish Swimming Instructor certification required (Available through HSU)
