SUMMARY/SCOPE:

Oversee engineering laboratories both for academic and research purposes.

HSU JOB FAMILY CLASSIFICATION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Utilize conventional and modern equipment to fabricate parts or prototypes for academic and research purposes, including CNC and conventional milling machines and lathes, water jet cutters, laser cutters, welding equipment, and other common machine shop tools and equipment.

Facilitate and oversee the repair and maintenance of scientific equipment.

Support laboratory-focused courses, including instructing students on safe equipment usage and fabricating specimens for laboratory testing.

Train and certify students, faculty, and staff in safe equipment operation.

Be responsible for the safety, overall cleanliness, and proper operating condition of equipment and labs.

Supervise student workers who help in laboratories.

Be able to problem-solve in the moment and use independent judgement and discretion in evaluation of tasks, opportunities, and problems at hand.

Must be organized, able to handle several projects simultaneously, and be flexible regarding tasks.

Able to stay on task without direct supervision.

Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities except for 2- 4 student workers in the engineering department.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES (Language, Mathematical, Reasoning and Computer Skills):

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software; Internet software; CAD software.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

 Required:  Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred: Minimum of two years of experience in manufacturing and/or fabrication or engineering laboratory background.  Degree in engineering technology, manufacturing engineering, industrial engineering, or related field.  Strong CAD and/or design experience.

Additional Requirements:

Must be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.

Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills.

Must be organized, able to handle several projects simultaneously and be flexible regarding tasks.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This position is a Full-Time, Non-Exempt/Hourly Staff position.

A regular 40-hour workweek is required at minimum (plus occasional overtime).

A minimum of a 40-hour work week is expected. Occasional irregular hours and evening and weekend work and/or assignments beyond a 40-hour week is required during peak season and/or to meet project deadlines is required.

Must have and maintain a valid Class C Driver's License and maintain a clear driving record to be insurable under the university liability policy.

Must be able to drive to complete work assignments on and off campus, as needed. 

Additional travel may be required on occasion in order to attend training, etc.
