SUMMARY/SCOPE:

The dean provides leadership for the academic programs in the Kelley College of Business & Professional Studies and supervises 14 full-time faculty and a half-dozen adjuncts. The College offers bachelor’s degrees in the business fields of Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Information Systems, Management, and Marketing. Its Irvin School of Education offers Bachelor’s Degrees in Human Services Administration and in the teacher certification fields of Interdisciplinary Generalist, Early Childhood to Grade 6, and 17 fields in the Arts & Sciences. It offers the Master of Business Administration, Generalist, the Master of Business Administration in Sport Business, and the Master of Arts in Management. Leadership is needed in the form of planning, development, and implementation of all academic programs within the College. The successful candidate will need to have excellent communication skills and to be able to work closely with other deans and university administrators. The dean is responsible for the preparation of comprehensive annual reports for the HSU Board of Trustees and accrediting agencies. The dean will work with foundations, organizations, and donors of the College to promote growth of endowment and support. Active participation in state and national professional organizations is encouraged.

Manage academic resources to advance the school's academic standing and the University's mission.

Communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and University constituencies.

Support faculty in ways that enhance teaching, research, and scholarship.

Lead efforts in strategic planning, establishing outcomes, and assessment leading to continuous improvement of institutional effectiveness.

Possess an informed understanding of the challenges facing Christian higher education in the twenty-first century and an openness to innovation to meet those challenges.

Demonstrate leadership ability.

Harness technology in the teaching/learning environment.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The dean will supervise two associate deans, four department heads, fourteen full-time faculty, and six to ten adjunct faculty, staff, and student workers.

QUALIFICATIONS:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. KSA’s (Language, Mathematical, Reasoning and Computer Skills):

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administration, faculty, students and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of word processing software; spreadsheet software; and Internet software.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Earned doctorate from an accredited program required in one of the teaching fields in Business or Education.

Excellent teaching and communication skills required.

This position is a non-tenure track appointment with a 12-month annual contract.

This job is sedentary in nature. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods while performing office and computer operations. Occasionally will be required to stand; walk and stoop and/or kneel.

Occasional trips across campus from one building to another may be required.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 - 25 pounds.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and explosives; and may work near moving mechanical parts at times.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This position is a Full-Time, Exempt Level Faculty position with a teaching load at the Hardin-Simmons University campus. Must be willing to relocate to Abilene, Texas, or the surrounding area to teach in-person classes on the HSU Campus.

Occasional travel may be required for student evaluation/sponsorship and professional development.

Must have and maintain a valid Class C Driver’s License and maintain a clear driving record to be insurable under the university liability policy.

Must be able to drive to complete work assignments on and off campus, as needed.

Additional travel may be required on occasion for training workshops and/or professional conferences, etc.
