POSITION:  Assistant, Associate or Full Professor of Theory, Composition and Piano (Exempt)

COLLEGE/DEPARTMENT:  College of Arts & Media

SUPERVISOR TITLE:  Dean of the College of Arts and Media, Chair of the School of Music

FLSA STATUS:  Exempt

EXEMPTION:  Teacher Exemption

LOCATION: HSU Campus, Abilene, Texas

TARGET HIRE DATE:  Initial review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The anticipated start date is August 2025.

SUMMARY/SCOPE:

Located in Abilene Texas, Hardin-Simmons University is a faith-based liberal arts university affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas. This faculty member will teach music theory, composition, keyboard and perform on their primary instrument and as a collaborative pianist.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

An artist-performer and teacher with demonstrated ability to develop a vibrant studio of students and who values collaborating with fellow artists and student musicians in a faith-filled community.

Contribute to the development and maintenance of the music theory core and composition studies.

Teach courses in the music theory core curriculum.

Teach composition students as needed.

Prepare students for recitals as per their program requirements

Administer the keyboard program.

Maintain an active career as performer and teacher.

Possesses a diverse range of styles including classical, jazz, worship, musical theatre, and contemporary commercial musical and possesses the ability to teach these styles.

Maintain accurate student records, including syllabi, attendance, and grading.

Advise current and prospective students.

Collaborate with music and theatre faculty in the mounting of musicals, operas, opera scenes and other musical presentations as needed.

Participate in recruitment activities for the School of Music.

Collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, administrators, and members of the community.

Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES (Language, Mathematical, Reasoning and Computer Skills):

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.  

COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software; Internet software; Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, Design software; Payroll systems and Order processing systems.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

A master’s degree in music (theory/composition) is required.

Teaching experience is preferred.

None are required for this position at this time.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires standing/sitting for lectures, stooping, squatting, kneeling, getting up and down from the floor and lifting up to 10 -25 lbs. and occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds. 

Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Occasional trips across campus from one building to another may be required.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This position is a Full-Time Exempt Level position with a teaching load at the Hardin-Simmons University campus. Must be willing to relocate to Abilene, Texas, or the surrounding area to teach in-person classes on the HSU Campus.

Must have and maintain a valid Class C Driver’s License and maintain a clear driving record to be insurable under the university liability policy.

Must be able to drive to complete work assignments on and off campus, as needed.

Office and classroom work; working with technology, travel for field experiences.
