POSITION:  Assistant Professor in Psychology and Counseling

COLLEGE/DEPARTMENT:  Department of Psychology and Counseling; Cynthia Ann Parker College of Liberal Arts

SUPERVISOR TITLE:  Head of the Department of Psychology and Counseling

FLSA STATUS:  Exempt

EXEMPTION:  Teacher Exemption

LOCATION: HSU Campus, Abilene, Texas

TARGET HIRE DATE:  Initial review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Approximately June 1, 2025, or August 1, 2025

SUMMARY/SCOPE:

This faculty member will teach courses and supervise students in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) master's program and teach undergraduate courses in psychology.

HSU JOB FAMILY CLASSIFICATION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Teach lower- and upper-level undergraduate Psychology classes. Prepare and deliver lectures to students for a minimum of 24 credit hours per year. 

Teach courses and supervise students in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) master's program.

Advise current and prospective students in the CMHC program. 

Collaborate effectively with university faculty, staff, and administrators, as well as members of the community.

Participate in recruitment activities for the Department of Psychology and Counseling, the Cynthia Ann Parker College of Liberal Arts, as well as HSU.

Provide service to HSU through involvement in committees as well as other HSU activities (e.g., commencement).

Engage in ongoing professional development as well as scholarly work.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

There are no supervisor responsibilities currently. 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Requires a doctoral degree in Counselor Education, Psychology, or related studies. Doctoral degree must be from a Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredited graduate program.

Provide evidence of scholarly achievements & teaching ability, including satisfactorily passing teaching demonstration.

All qualifications must be met by the time of the appointment.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Current license from the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors.

Valid Class C Driver’s License and maintain a clear driving record to be insurable under the university liability policy.

Provide criminal background checks to verify no arrests or convictions for crimes.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk, sit, and/or use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to taste or smell.

This position requires standing/sitting for lectures, stooping, squatting, kneeling, getting up and down from the floor and lifting up to 10 -25 lbs. on occasion.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This position is a Full-Time Exempt Level Faculty Position with a teaching load at the Hardin-Simmons University campus. Additional travel may be required for student evaluation/sponsorship and/or professional development. Little intermittent travel required, less than 60 days per year, within the same MSA. Must be willing to relocate to Abilene, Texas, or the surrounding area to teach in-person classes on the HSU Campus.

Must be able to drive to complete work assignments on and off campus, as needed.
