SUMMARY/SCOPE:

A vital leader in the Office of University Marketing, the Communications & Content Strategy Specialist will set and guide the strategy for university communications and marketing content development, including Range Rider, Public Relations and News Media, Crisis Communication, Website Stories, Comm Flows, Print, Signage, and Digital media, and other marketing collateral. The Specialist will be responsible for aligning the development of communications, relevant messaging, and content with the purpose and mission of the institution and ensuring effectiveness of branded content to target audiences.

HSU JOB FAMILY CLASSIFICATION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING: 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: These examples do not include all possible tasks & do not limit the assignment of related tasks.            

In collaboration with the Director for University Marketing, develop content strategies, communications messaging, and other content planning.

Copywriter and copyeditor for Creative Services.

Develop long-range content communication strategies, content and communications timelines, campaigns, comm flows, and media plans.

Advance the visibility of the University through deadline-driven earned media, web stories and electronic media, including outlets like newsbreak.

Cultivate, manage, and track relationships with news media, the Abilene community, and key campus stakeholders.

Partner with HSU marketing’s primary clients and attend regular meetings with the offices of admissions, advancement, alumni, and athletics to develop, design, and finalize projects for each office.

Research content and provide Historical Accuracy for all Marketing projects.

Collaborate with the Director for University Marketing and the Art Director & Senior Graphic Designers to brainstorm design and content strategy for Marketing Advertisements.

Attend weekly Marketing meetings to discuss new ideas, and brainstorm, create, and edit current and future processes or projects as a team.

Establish and manage the communication style guide for the university to define the university’s voice and tone.

Develop and prepare canned messaging for internal and external communication, including crisis communication.

Write and edit compelling content, articles, and stories in alignment with University goals and strategies for all outlets, including web, social, and PR.

Serve as the primary campus point-of-contact for all media and head the efforts for press releases to promote HSU in the media.

Solicit, organize, manage, and track on-campus media requests including, but not limited to, expert inquiries, on-camera/on-record interviews, news conferences, and crisis communication.

Develop a document for all HSU personnel to be used in media needs.

Oversee, spearhead, and edit the biannual Range Rider publication, whether executed internally or externally. Working closely with the Director for University Marketing and the Art Director & Senior Graphic Designer to develop concepts for each edition.

Supervise, mentor, and coach student workers for the areas of Content Strategy.

Work alongside the Social Media & Communications Specialist to create written and digital content for the university.

Create a content calendar for the website stories, aligning with the Social Media & Communications Specialists social calendar.

Use the Social Media & Communications Specialist to assist in written projects for the university.

KSA’s (Language, Mathematical, Reasoning and Computer Skills):

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.  Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style.  Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software; Project Management software and Order processing systems.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree required. Ideal candidate will have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited, four-year college or University with a preferred concentration or major in Journalism, Public Relations, Integrated Marketing, Mass Communication, English, or other related communication field.

5 years of professional experience in Journalism, PR, or related Communications field preferred.

3 years of experience in social media management preferred.

Must be very detail-oriented, highly organized, hard-working and efficient.

Must be able to meet deadlines and multi-task in a high-volume service area.

Must be an excellent communicator in both written and verbal forms.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This position is an Exempt/Salaried Full-Time position.

A minimum of a 40-hour work week is expected. Irregular hours, occasional evening and weekend work and/or assignments beyond a 40-hour week may be required during peak season and/or to meet project deadlines.

Must have and maintain a valid Class C Driver’s License and maintain a clear driving record to be insurable under the university liability policy.

Must be able to drive to complete work assignments on and off campus, as needed.

Infrequent travel may be required on occasion in order to attend training, etc.
