POSITION:  Assistant Track Coach (Throws Coach)/ Athletics Marketing (Exempt)

LOCATION: HSU Campus, Abilene, Texas

SUMMARY/SCOPE:

The primary responsibility of this position is to assist in the management of the track program including assisting with coaching athletes who specialize in throwing events. The assistant will also help with recruitment of qualified prospective student-athletes, travel planning, fundraising efforts, community outreach projects, team promotion and other daily projects as assigned by the Head Coach. HSU is a member of NCAA Division III and the American Southwest Conference. This is a full-time staff position.

HSU JOB FAMILY CLASSIFICATION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Coaching – Works with athletes in the track program who participate in throwing events (Discus, Hammer Throw, Javelin, Shot Put).

Recruiting – Telephone calls, attendance at track meets as well as letters and written correspondence to potential student athletes/planning and executing campus visits for recruits.

Assist with camps and clinics.

Football Tailgate- Will be the main contact person for the football tailgate for all home football games.

Marketing- Responsible for marketing special events for each sport to help promote fan attendance.

Game Day Administrator-Volleyball -- Will attend all home volleyball matches and will serve as the Game Day Administrator for all home matches.

Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES (Language, Mathematical, Reasoning and Computer Skills):

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables

COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software; Human Resources systems, Contact Management systems, Internet software; and Synergy editing system.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university required.

Prior track coaching or playing experience at the high school and/or college level is required.

Prior recruiting experience with evaluation, relationship building, and recruitment of student-athletes is required.

Must have proficient computer skills, strong work ethic and effective communication skills.

Must also have excellent organizational skills as candidates will be required to provide examples of their ability to plan and organize.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications required (or must be obtained).

This job is active in nature (pushing, pulling, lifting, moving equipment, etc.)

Must be able to stand and move for long periods of time while performing office and gym functions.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This is a full time Exempt Level Staff Position which often requires extended hours beyond a 40-hour work week, especially during basketball season and while recruiting

Frequent overnight travel is required, including evenings and weekends, especially during track season.

Occasionally holiday work is also required depending on meet/practice schedule.

Additional travel may be required on occasion to attend training workshops.  

Must have and maintain a valid Class C Driver’s License and maintain a clear driving record to be insurable under the university liability policy.

Must be able to drive to complete work assignments on and off campus, as needed.
