POSITION:  Visiting Assistant or Associate Professor in Psychology, Counseling, and Communication, Non-Tenure Track (Exempt)

COLLEGE/DEPARTMENT:  Department of Psychology & Counseling; Cynthia Ann Parker College of Liberal Arts

SUPERVISOR TITLE:  Head of the Department of Psychology and Counseling

FLSA STATUS:  Exempt

EXEMPTION:  Teacher Exemption

LOCATION: HSU Campus, Abilene, Texas

TARGET HIRE DATE:  Initial review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The preferred start date is August 2024.

SUMMARY/SCOPE:

This faculty member will teach classes in the undergraduate Psychology and Communication programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Teach undergraduate Psychology classes.

Collaborate effectively with university faculty, staff, and administrators, as well as members of the community.

Engage in ongoing professional development as well as scholarly work.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES (Language, Mathematical, Reasoning and Computer Skills):

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.  

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

COMPUTER SKILLS: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software; Internet software.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Earned Master’s degrees in both psychology-related and communication-related areas are required.

Teaching experience is preferred.

All qualifications must be met by the time of the appointment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, and/or use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to taste or smell.

This position requires standing/sitting for lectures, stooping, squatting, kneeling, getting up and down from the floor and lifting up to 10 -25 lbs. on occasion.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This position is a Full-Time Exempt Level Faculty Position with a teaching load at the Hardin-Simmons University campus. Additional travel may be required for student evaluation/sponsorship and/or professional development. Must be willing to relocate to Abilene, Texas, or the surrounding area to teach in-person classes on the HSU Campus.

Must have and maintain a valid Class C Driver’s License and maintain a clear driving record to be insurable under the university liability policy.

Must be able to drive to complete work assignments on and off campus, as needed.
